History of the Málaga Fair

The Málaga Fair, also known as the Feria de Agosto, has its origins in a key historical event: the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs on 19 August 1487, when Málaga was incorporated into the Crown of Castile.

The first celebration of the fair, following the establishment of Málaga Town Council, took place on 15 August 1491 with a procession. However, the following year, it was decided to change the date to the memorable 19 August. Over the years, the fair has been held annually and, from the 17th century onwards, fireworks and rockets have been set off – a tradition that continues in today’s Feria.

One of the distinctive features of the Málaga fair is that it comprises two areas of celebration: the daytime fair, located in the centre of Málaga, and the night-time fair, which takes place at the Cortijo de Torres, in the Teatinos area. When and where to watch the fireworks at the 2023 Málaga Fair

The fireworks display officially marks the start of the celebrations and takes place in the early hours of Friday 11th to Saturday 12th August at midnight. It lasts for around 20 minutes.

That night, there is no Feria as such, but many people take the opportunity to go out in the centre of Málaga, creating a pre-Feria atmosphere ahead of the event, which officially begins on Saturday 12th.

The fireworks are set off from the cruise terminal access area and can be seen from many parts of the city, and even from neighbouring towns such as Torremolinos and Rincón de la Victoria.

If you want to watch them from the centre of Málaga, you’ll need to find a vantage point, such as La Coracha or Gibralfaro Castle, or a spot with a good view of the bay, such as Muelle Uno – and what better place to watch the fireworks than the restaurant

Where is the Malaga fair held?
